Elevated Entrance and Defined Volumes

Somerset Road

Milligan Knight Architects have been comissioned to design a new build house at the rear of Somerset Road, New Barnet. The proposed site is an L-shape form, which contains an existing outdoor swimming pool. We have designed a contemporary brick house, suitable for modern family living, that has also carefully considered the surrounding context and will be a high quality addition to the neighbourhood.

Elevated Entrance and Defined Volumes

Elevated Entrance and Defined Volumes

The entrance elevation demonstrates the different volumes that exist within the design and how the second storey is stepped back from the eastern boundary. The generous stair brings you up to the entrance storey from the driveway up to a glazed doorway. Vertically proportioned windows, that relate to the surrounding context of Georgian and Victorian sash windows, puncture the facade in an elegant composition.

At ground floor, a glazed entrance hall gives views through to the gardens beyond and both physically and visually breaks the primary living space to the west from the bedroom accommodation to the east. A second lounge is provided to the south, which connects to the second garden space. One double bedroom is located at this level, giving the ability for an elderly or disabled resident to live on one storey if required.

Private Upper Level

Private Upper Level

The first floor only covers the eastern element of the dwelling and sets back from the eastern boundary. Three double bedrooms are located on this floor along with associated bathrooms and dressing rooms.

To the rear of the property the house opens up more, with generous glazed openings that connect to the garden space and bring daylight into the main living spaces.

The west elevation highlights the smaller windows that belong to the bedrooms and associated bathrooms. The grain is different to the south - reflecting the scale and function of the space behind.

Negotiating Level Changes

Negotiating Level Changes

The site is significantly higher than the access road serving it and therefore the proposal has to negotiate some level changes.

Due to the plot being steeply sloped i.e. a large difference between the access road and the site, a stepped access is unavoidable. However the steps are ambulant disabled and provision has been made for a platform lift or stair lift if it was required by a future resident. The WC and habitable rooms on the entrance storey (ground floor) are all step free and on one storey.
